Generating Song Lyrics With Prompts

Prompts are tools to jump-start your creativity. The simplest ones are just one word (or short phrase) that begins or ends every line when you're in the lyric writing process.

Here are some fun and easy same prompts:

  • Because...

  • Today...

  • You can't...

  • I feel...

  • Whatever... (or ...Whatever! Ha ha)

  • My...

  • You say...

  • Last night...

  • Wait...

  • I told you... (or I'm telling you...)

Remember you don't have to keep the prompt in for the final lyric. You can use it where you want.

Some writers just use the prompt in the first line; some use it intermittently. Some take it completely out (and amazingly, the words often still go together just fine. The prompt is like some kind of verbal "phantom limb" where, even after it's gone, it feels like it's still there!)

Sometimes the prompt actually becomes the song title. Do what works for you and your song.
